Acupuncture is traditionally used as preventive medicine; acupuncture is a therapy using natural laws and energies with the application of needles and pressure to specific points on the body. These points are grouped along specific pathways or meridians that cross throughout the body. Traditional acupuncture is founded on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of energy (Qi) and blood (Xue) through distinct meridians that cover the body similar to how nerves and blood vessels do. Acupuncture allows “Qi” to flow to areas where the energy is deficient and away from where the energy is in excess; it regulates and restores the harmonious balance of the body’s energy. There is a Chinese saying, “there is no pain if there is free flow; if there is pain, there is no free “flow.” As long as the energy flows freely through the meridians, health is maintained. However, when the energy flow is deficient, excessive, blocked, or absent in any area, health has been disrupted and pain is the result. By stimulating the appropriate acupuncture points along the meridians, energy is released and health is restored.

Recent research has now verified that acupuncture stimulates the immune function by increasing the T-cells counts and increases your resistance to bacterial and viral infections which is why acupuncture also works on allergies.

Studies have also indicated that acupuncture influences the central and peripheral nervous systems and aids to release pain-killing endorphins from the brain which makes acupuncture particularly effective in pain control.

Among a host of factors, acupuncture affects sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in the blood; the functioning of the gastro-intestinal system and the activities of the endocrine system can also be affected. Acupuncture works by releasing serotonin from the brain which prays a big part in managing our mood which is why depression is often treated with acupuncture.

The Oriental Medical Doctor’s (O.M.D.) approach is to treat the person first, not just the symptoms. The disease is treated as a consequent of treating the whole person. Many acupuncturists extensively question the potential patient regarding medical and person history, life habits or patterns and a physical examination during the initial visit.
